What are some good hostels in Amsterdam?
I'm planning to stay in a hostel for two weeks, with four friends. But I'm a little hesitant because of the reputation of hostels being dirty, dangerous, and cramped. I want something that is clean, friendly, and can accommodate all of us. What are some recommendations? And money is not an issue.

I would remcomend staying at the Flying Pig hostel chain. I stayed there and the staff are great and its clean. They have free internet a bar and light snacks. There is staff 24hrs and there are 3 hostels. One is in the red light district, one out of the main part near a nice park and one out of amsterdamn on the beach. The web site is www.flyingpig.nl and it explains everything.
Good luck
How much would it cost to stay in hostels across Italy for 3 weeks?
I'd like to do a self-directed bike tour of Italy, staying in hostels along the way. Could someone please offer a ballpark figure for cost of accomodation, groceries, plus a recommended budget for sightseeing? Please use Italian Lira as a currency.
Thank you very much!

The currency in Italy is the EUR (€).
Exchange rates:
1 EUR ~ 1,60 US$
1 EUR ~ 1,62 CAN$
21 nights in youthhostel just bed 420 €
21 days groceries 420 €
21 days others incl. sightseeing 510 €
Total is round about 1.500 € incl. smaller risks.
Do not forget a card for the cash-mashines.
If you become ill you have to pay for the doctors cash.
You will get the money back from your insurance company
but later.

Where are hostels registered and where to report a dirty one?
I have been traveling and stayed in a hostel in Glasgow. The hygiene standards were below any expectation level. Not to mention BED BUGS!!!!!
I will be complaining in writing to the owner, however, I wonder which association hostels fall under and where I could take my complaint in case the hostel's owner does not take responsibility.
The receptionist was drunk and refused to refund me when I approached him with this matter.

I would report them to the local council who are responsible for establishments in their area. They have environmental health and safety officers who can visit and if need be close down places which are below standard.
Associations are usually there for the benefit of the members more than the public. Members join, pay a fee to promote their establishment through the association. If the hostel you went to is a member of any association it would be on their literature.
How do the rates for hostels in Paris work?
Im staying in a hostel for about a week in Paris. Im trying to reserve a room for me and two friends. Most of the hostels dont have dorm rooms like they do in other parts of the world, so I figured a triple room would be fine. Most are lsited close to 100 euros. Is this cost per person or for the whole room? Im pretty sur eits for the entire room. I just want to be sure so we dont get jipped

Comparied to other hostels in Europe, hostels in Paris are not all that great. I would suggest a 2 star hotel. There are lots of them, and you can find them in better areas than most of the hostels in Paris. We stayed at Hotel Montebello near the Metro stop Duroc and it turned out to be 45 Euro a night (for 2 people), which was about equal to hostel prices---plus we got our own room and own bathroom and better location.
Can my friend and I travel to Europe using Hostels, even though we are underage?
Me and my friend are planning to do some traveling using Hostels. When we are going I will be between 16 and 17, and she will be between 17 and 18. I don't know if we are allowed to go unaccompanied by an adult over 21. I have heard that if you bring a letter of consent signed by your parent everything is fine. But I need to know for sure.

What are the closest hostels to the amtrak station in LA?
I'll be coming into Los Angeles by train and would like to know if there is any youth hostels within walking distance? Any help will be appreciated...
Thanks.

Question answered by Texas Jew Boy
I am not sure if you are going to find any hostels within walking distance from the Amtrak station. the nearest are in Hollywood (7 miles) and Santa Monica (12miles). You can find hotels close to Amtrak, but not in hostel price range (or if they are, you might not feel comfortable/safe). Its best to transit or taxi to Hollywood or Santa Monica. Most of what you want to see will be in or near Hollywood, so splurge on a cab or bus.
Where can i find cheap double room hostels in norway?
Im looking for hostels in Bergen, Oslo and Stockholm, Sweden. What prices can i expect in august for 2 people sharing a double room in a hostel or hotel?

Question answered by Elizabeth
The cheapest double room in Bergen (that I know of) is at Marken Gjestehus. It's basic but clean and friendly. 495 NOK/room (~£55) plus bedding rental.

Haraldsheim Hostel in Oslo is one of the cheaper ones. I haven't stayed at hostels in Oslo though, so I can't give a personal recommendation. 540 NOK/room (~£60) plus bedding rental. A few other budget options are listed at the Wikitravel link.

There are lots of choices for Stockholm, ranging ~450-550 SEK/room (~£40-50). Just use Wikitravel and Tripadvisor to pick which one suits you best.

Are the lockers in European hostels big enough for a suitcase?
To those who have stayed at European hostels: I'm planning to stay in hostels when I'm travelling in Europe. I will be bringing an average size suitcase (20x30x8 inches size). Will it fit in the hostel lockers? I'm asking this because I read that usually backpackers stay in hostels, so I'm wondering if the lockers are only big enough for backpacks.

Hey Bro
I've stayed at hostels all over the globe...and plenty in Europe. Not all hostels have private lockers and not all of those that do, have latches that aren't hanging by one screw. One thing that most all hostels have in common is a pack room for storing you large packs, luggage's, (surf board) and what not. Though these rooms are open to all folks staying in the place, I have never had anything stolen.
Though hosteling attracts a type of familiar crowed with an above average honesty rating, thieves can be found anywhere. Always keep your important stuff and valuables separate.
Keep your expendables in you pack, but keep your valuables and documents in a small fanny pack or other bag ( I use a very cool, small over the shoulder document/travel case) that you will keep with you at all times. I find that keeping my money, documents and toothbrush in a very small pack keeps those things I use most together...I sleep with it next to my pillow, and put the strap over "cross shoulder" style when I sleep on the bus or walking about...Small comfortable "man bags" are pretty hip in Europe and elsewhere and handier than a fanny pack)
Remember it isn't the way of the hosteling crowd to steal, but it is the way of the thief to hang out around tourists...and that's what you will be..
Have fun.
Is it necessary to book youth hostels in Brussels and paris during September 6 to 13?
I have to go there for attending a conference but unsure if i hove to book youth hostels. Any information will help a lot. Thanks in advance.
Question answered by Willeke
September is not the high season for tourists anymore but it is the start of the University year, and as such the hostels might be pretty full with students who did not find a room yet, and with start of the year tours from schools all over Europe.
And you will want to stay near where the conference is held, not way out in the suburbs.
So yes, I would make reservations.
