Rugby players: Are you given instruction in first aid as part of your training?

Or is first aid entirely the responsibility of the medical staff?

Colette

Question answered by Aussie Chef

No, players don't have to take a 1st aid course, but the referee MUST hold a current certificate. Every game there is always medical staff close by, & that's for all games, from U/5's right through to the professionals. However, we are trained on how to take hits & deliver hits safly, eg. making sure your head isn't infront of the oposition players knee while trying to tackle him.

What year do you think this antique First Aid Kit was made by the Medical Supply Company of Rockford IL?

I just bought this first aid kit from produced by MS Co for Rockford. The box has no markings on the outside or dating, and the contents have no dating as well. Boxes are white with the logo in a gold sunburst sort of thing. Lid has a rubber seal and instruction on basic first aid info. can be hung on wall or carried with small metal handle.

Without a picture and more information it is impossible to tell. Take it to a reputable pawn broker or auctioneer or antique dealer and most likely they will be able to help you figure it out.

What are some household products that can be used for First Aid?

Obviously, every person in ahome should be able to dial the Emergency Number with clear instructions and a First Aid kit in homes is always a good idea, but what natural household products can be used for First Aid? I know pepper can be used for cuts, aloe for burns (after it's been under running cold water for at least 10 minutes) but are there more? Hazel: All the sites I've read about burn care have said: " do NOT put butter or salt containing substances on burns."

Garlic Garlic can be used on acne or infected spots due to its antiseptic properties. Simply rub the garlic clove on the infected area. Crushed garlic can be used to draw corns. Onion Onion can be used to relieve insect stings, nettle rash or hives. Take a fresh slice of onion and place it over the inflamed area. Ginger Ginger is useful for nausea and to prevent travel sickness. Chew a piece of crystallized ginger or drink fresh infused ginger herbal tea. This can also be useful during pregnancy. Chamomile Use an infusion of Chamomile flowers taken as herbal tea for shock and nervous upsets. Peppermint Use an infusion of peppermint leaves in a herbal tea for indigestion. Aloe The Aloe vera plant can be used to soothe minor burns, scalds and sunburn. Simply split a leaf open and apply the gel to the affected area. Wild flowers There are also many countryside plants and herbs having medicinal properties. These include : Daisies for bruises and sprains Yarrow for wounds and nosebleeds Lemon balm for insect bites Dock leaves for nettle stings ________ i wanted to add saliva is a good antiseptic ginger shredded strips, for sore throat & coughs limestone, for insect stings, infections (watchout it's pretty corrosive, only a small pinch) sugar crystals for reducing bleeding / helping clotting, from cuts & gashes

Suicide First Aid (Radial / Ulnar Arteries cut)?

My girlfriend's roommate located in other town, which I talk to by ICQ locked herself in a bath and cut her veins. I am pretty good with web searching and I couldn't find a single entry on FIRST AID in that case. Please write a short, written in easy language (better understandable by non-native speakers) first aid instructions. I myself gathered that you should apply pressure (sterile, of course) and elevate. That a bad case is when the hand's been kept in water and if cuts are long and go along the arteries, not cross them. My first advice to the reader is DON'T PANIC. My mom had cut her veins in a bathtub and laid there for a good half hour before my father discovered her and she was saved, lost no movement in her arms.

Question answered by Kierano Campello

Seek medical attention immediately. Keep applying pressure to the areas of bleeding. Put a gauze pad over the cut and wrap a bandage round and round, maintaining strict pressure. If they aren't available Put a small towel tightly over the cut and wrap a scarf / other piece of material round tightly. If blood can be seen coming through the towels/guaze pad, keep wrapping round more and more bandages/scarfs. Keep the wrists (i presume) elevated above the heart. Don't worry too much about keeping things sterile/free of infection at this stage. Good luck.

Putting together a guinea pig first aid kit?

I googled what to put in a guinea pig first aid kit and came across this list right here on answers: *1 - Bottle Powder Stypic (toenail bleeding) *1 - Pair Latex Gloves (personal protection from blood) *1 - 1" x 6 yd. Sterile Gauze Bandage (wrap wounds) *1 - Bottle of Eye & Skin Wash, 1 Fl. Oz. (flush wounds) *2 - Packages of Triple Antibiotic Ointment, 1 gr. (wound) *2 - Packages of Hydrocortisone Cream 1 gr. (rashes, itching) *2 - PVP Iodine Antiseptic wipes (sterilization) *2 - Insect sting wipes (apply to insect bites/stings) *1 - Roll 1/2" x 21/2 yd. Adhesive Tape (secure bandage) *2 - Packages 2" x 2" Gauze Pad (apply to wounds) *2 - Packages 3" x 3" Gauze Pad (apply to wounds) *1 - Pair Scissors (trim hair and cut bandage or tape) *1 - Hand Wipe (personal cleanup) *2 - Antiseptic Towelettes (clean wound or hands) *5 - Cotton Swab (apply ointments or creams) *2 - Green Soap Towelettes (clean wound or hands) *1 - Pet Care Card (detailed first aid instructions) *1 - Pet Emergency Card (record your vet's emergency #'s) *1 - Pr. Plastic Forceps (splinters/tick removal) *1 - Pet Kit Case I actually have 2 questions 1. is there anything you would add to this? 2. Where can I get these things? I know some I will be going to the pest store for, but things like eye wash or skin wash is that just stuff I would get at a drug store and use myself? or is there a specific kind I have to get for my pigs? I know that's more than 2 questions, but I appreciate any help you can give me

Any store like walmart or walgreens. Eye and skin wash should be saline solution, nothing special. Hydrocortisone Cream I think is a no-no unless it's meant to use on yourself! Insect sting wipes, again, not for use on the pig. Green Soap Towelettes, skip these. The saline is good enough. Triple Antibiotic Ointment, not for on the pig, only for you. PVP Iodine Antiseptic wipes, not unless you are doing surgery...if you are bitten, wash with soap and water. Pet care card can be gotten from a vet or pet store. Pet emergency card can be an index card. I think this list is misleading and dangerous. I would not use all those items meant to treat humans on a guinea pig without vet approval. Also, a paste of corn starch can be used instead of expensive stypic powder! Mix to a thick paste and apply and hold pressure for a few minutes. I would add a few napkins or paper towel, a zip bag or small bottle, like from 35 mm film to put ticks or other small critters in to get identified, and if you are traveling with your pig, a bottle of water and a small fleece blanket.

What is the cheapest way to get a large group CPR/AED/First Aid certified in Northern VA/DC area?

Looking to certify about 50-100 people in CPR/AED/First Aid in Northern VA. Would it be cheaper to have someone come to us or have one of our managers be certified as an instructor & purchase all of the supplies/equipment for instruction?

Check with Fairfax County Public schools. The have Adult and Community Education (ACE) classes in first aid. It costs $49 per student, but you could probably work with them to set up special classes at your company at a discount rate.

(for a story) How would you provide first aid to this person?

She is a 14 year old female, with a broken leg, broken arm, stab wound to the left side of the abdomen and a shattered rib cage. How could the first responders help her? (step-by-step instruction plz.) The first responders are her two brothers. What would the doctors do for her at the hospital? What kind of surgeries would she need? How could her brothers comfort her? How much pain would she be in? Would she pass out? plz. answer all of the questions. Thank you for your time.

Question answered by

Are these first responders actually trained in EMS? Do they have equipment (oxygen, stretcher,etc..) An EMT or Paramedic first responder would do the following: (please note alot of these things are done simultaneously with little or no disruption to care) 1) Assess the scene for safety (especially given the stab wound) Apply gloves and mask 2) they would maintain c-spine 3) They would apply 02 via nonrebreather mask 4) Begin to assess the patient. Identifying issues 5) Upon discovery of the said injuries, ALS and/or a trauma alert would be dispatched. Possible Helivac. 6) They would apply address the stab wound first, applying hemorrhage control steps. 7) simultaneously assessing vitals and skin condition & obtaining history 8) They would apply a splint to the arm, as well as the leg (possibly pull traction which help alleviate some of the pain) 9) They would then 'package' the patient for transport. As this would a 'load n go' scenario. Only the most pertinent issues (the stab wound) and applying traction. Would be addressed on scene. 10) While enroute they would begin a more thorough exam of the patient checking for any other unseen issues. As for at the hospital, I dont know. But there would be surgeries to address the stab wound first, then they would move on to the broken limbs. As for the pain I would imagine it would be great, however ALS (Paramedics) would adminster pain killers. Her brothers could comfort her just by quiet (as in being calm) and talking to her reassuring her that everything will be ok.
