How do scuba divers use the laws and principles that describe the behavior of gases to their advantage?

How do scuba divers use the laws and principles that describe the behavior of gases to their advantage? What precautions do they take to prevent the bends?

Subkultured

Question answered by

Because a large volume of air can be compressed into a small volume cylinder, the use of Scuba Gear is popular to those that wish to go diving deep and, for an extended period, maybe for an hour or more depending on the amount of air compressed into the cylinder. The following is based mainly on the Inverse Pressure and Volume, Boyle's Law At the surface, the atmospheric pressure is 1atm. Absolute or 14.7Psia. For every 34 feet (10m) of depth below the surface, the pressure increases by 1 atm. 30 meters down the total pressure is 4atm. Absolute (58.8psi). The Air Regulator of the Scuba system keeps the supply to the diver at a pressure equal to the pressure the diver is at. His whole body including his blood system is at this pressure. His body system is therefore under a much higher pressure than at the surface.and the air in his blood system is the same. When the diver is returning to the surface, he must do so very slowly and breathe normally to allow his body to keep equalising with the decreasing pressure. If he comes up too fast, Nitrogen (and other gases), in solution in the blood forms bubbles in the blood and results in 'The Bends' as the bubbles collect in tissues and joints and build up pressure causing severe pain, cramps and even death. Divers, after long submergence, sometimes have to go into a 'Decompression' chamber to ensure all the high pressure dissolved gases have been eliminated

What is the total number of scuba divers in the Philippines?

I'm working at the tourism office, we need to know the total number of scuba divers in the Philippines because we're planning to launch Di-Beer Festival (Dî from the word diver and Beer) this coming October 28. We need your answer as soon as possible.Thank you i didn't mean that divers will be drinking before diving, we just named it because San Miguel will be our partner in this activity

Question answered by scubabob

If you want the local diver numbers, why not contact PADI, NAUI and SSI? They'll be better able to let you know who is certified in the country and probably have the average for tourist numbers. http://www.padi.com/padi/default.aspx http://www.naui.org/ http://www.divessi.com/ Those are the training agencies that will have reps in your area. And by the way...there's nothing wrong with having a couple of beers after a dive. Most divers will if that's the end of the dive day.

Why do divers need to shower after their turn?

I am watching the Olympics and I began to notice something: divers showering after their dive. It is just so insane. Aren't they not wet enough? I understand that they need to immerse on a hot tub, but why do they need to shower?

sadmonkey

Question answered by The Gypsy

cause the pool and air temperatures are different the pool is warmer and whenever you get out of the pool the air feels freezing which can cause your mucles to tighten up, they need to keep their muscles warm and moveable, so the shower (being the same temp as the pool i would imagine) keeps them from getting to cold to move

What is that small aquatic machine that divers use with lights and is able to skim water?

You'll usually find them with divers who wear diving masks and flippers with goggles, moving along on top of and 'maybe' under water looking at various things. They usually just use them to travel around with when they are away from their boats. They're in movies, documentaries and things. What are they called?

Question answered by moviebuff

I'm guessing that you are referring to Diver Propulsion Vehicles (DPVs). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jacopo_con_scooter_subacqueo_ad_Alghero.jpg for an image. Most recreational divers don't use them.

Why do women divers always keep their suits really wet between dives?

I've noticed the divers like to keep their suits wet. Is there a difference when u hit the water if your suit isn't really wet?

Question answered by gentleroger

I think what you're seeing is the divers wringing their shammies over their bodies from water from the hot tub (or similar source of warm water). Being in and out of the water makes it hard for the body to regulate body temperature. By hanging out in the hot tub or pouring warm water on themselves, the divers are staying warm and loose.

How many scuba divers have been killed by sharks?

I am curious as to how many divers have been attacked and killed by shark attacks while diving. I searched for stats on the internet, but came up empty handed.

Chachee

Question answered by earanger

Chachee, It seldom happens. Most divers avoid shark infested waters. Additionally, sharks tend to attack something they think they want to eat. Divers or surfers in black wet suits look like seals, otters, or other near-shore food. Divers wear things like shiny tanks, or have colored panels in our wetsuits to make us not look like a seal. How do scuba divers protect their ears from pressure?

I mean when I dive 10 feet down at the deep end of the pool it feels like thrusting needles into my eardrum. Divers like the ones on BBC's Oceans show dive up to 50, maybe 100 meters (300 feet). How are their ears not destroyed from the pressure?

randy

Question answered by Jack Squat

OK...I see some bad answers on here. When diving, you have to equalize your ears when going down. Some people can just swallow, some have to pinch their nose and try to blow through it to "pop" your ears. One does this every few feet down. When going up, you just go slow. The extra pressure is let out through your eustachian tubes out into your throat...

How do divers control the pressure in their ears?

How do divers control the pressure in their ears? It seems to me like there would be severe pain if you go past 30 feet.
