What is concrete?
Concrete is a mixture of portland cement, aggregates, and water that forms a hard, strong, stone-like material after curing. Concrete may also contain “admixtures” which are special chemicals designed
What is ready-mix?
Ready-mix concrete, also known as “ready-mixed concrete,” is delivered to jobsites in concrete mixer trucks that agitate and mix the material during transport. At the jobsite, it is “ready to use” and is generally specified for larger pours and slabs.
When should I use ready-mixed concrete or packaged concrete mix?
Packaged concrete is the preferred method of use for most DIY homeowners and contractors. It is preblended, thus requiring no premixing of dry materials. Most DIY projects require smaller quantities of material than can be economically provided by a ready-mix truck, making packaged concrete the most practical choice. Additionally, larger projects can be subdivided into smaller projects and completed on a more convenient schedule.
What is the difference between concrete and cement?
Cement is an ingredient in concrete. A chemical reaction called “hydration” takes place between the cement and water to bind the aggregates together to form concrete. “Cement” is commonly misused in reference to concrete
There are two types of ready mixed concrete plants: central plants (sometimes called "wet" plants) and dry-mix (traditional) plants. In central plants, a concrete batch is made up by an operator at the plant before it is loaded into the truck. At dry plants, the dry components of concrete are weighed and loaded separately into the truck mixer; water is then added and the final mix is made. Central plants offer producers more control over quality and consistency of the concrete mix, but require that a load be dropped in a shorter time, usually in 90 minutes or less.
